Losing quarterback Matt Ryan for any length of time would be a devastating blow to the Atlanta Falcons. The same goes for wide receiver Julio Jones.

However, another offensive star is nearly as important to the Falcons as that pair. And offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian had a bad habit last year of forgetting Devonta Freeman is one of the NFL’s most dangerous and versatile running backs.

Freeman fell short of the 1,000-yard mark on the ground last year partly because he missed two games, but his usage was all over the place. In five of Atlanta’s six regular-season losses, Freeman had no more than 12 carries.

This is stolen verbatim from a quote Babe would give later in the 1918 season: I don’t think a man can pitch in his regular turn and play some other position and keep the pace year after year. I can do it this season all right. I’m young and strong and don’t mind the work, but I wouldn’t guarantee to do it for many seasons.

It’s nevertheless been a difficult couple of months for Doleman, who rose to prominence three decades ago with the Vikings.. When a doctor tells you that you have brain cancer, it changes your whole world, Doleman said. Those are the scariest words that you’ll ever hear in your life. When I first heard it, I was so devastated by it I couldn’t get any words out of my mouth. Per Tomasson, Doleman has glioblastoma. In addition to the radiation, Doleman is undergoing chemotherapy. We’re working on [the cancer] on a daily basis, Doleman said. It can heal, and it can come back. I ask Vikings fans to pray for me on a daily basis. Just one day at a time. Vikings fans and all football fans should say a prayer for Doleman.

Limited to just 11 games due to injury, Davis caught 34 passes for 375 yards and didn’t reach the end zone during the regular season. If you watch the Week 16 tape against the Rams or take a look at his two touchdown grabs in the divisional-round playoff loss to the Patriots, however, Davis looked much improved. He has the frame (6-foot-3, 209 pounds), body control and big-play talent to produce consistent numbers in 2018 as the Titans transition to new coordinator Matt LaFleur’s system.

Aaron Rodgers has Jordy Nelson and Tom Brady has Bill Belichick.

They expected to have Romos skill as a passer and experience as a game manager to direct that attack, but when that was ruined by still another injury before the team even had played a game, Elliotts role grew in importance. And as the Cowboys worked to survive without Romo, Elliotts consistent production allowed fellow rookie Dak Prescott to grow into the daunting role of rookie quarterback.

Elliotts consecutive games of 140, 138, 134 and 157 yards into mid-October were essential to establishing the Cowboys could win with Prescott at the controls.

A group of NFL personnel executives surveyed by USA Today before Christmas agreed, by a slim margin, with my assessment. Of a dozen who participated in the anonymous survey, five picked Elliott, two more than Tom Brady. But the quote one of them offered aligned exactly with my position:

Hes changed their team, the GM said. Theyve had that offensive line for a couple years now. Hes come in there and dominated games. Hes running over people and smashing people. Hes a dominant force.

He carried the ball 322 times in 15 games, the most of any NFL running back in the 2016 season. Only 139 players in the history of the league have attempted that many runs in a single season.

The biggest argument against Elliott seems rather lame: that he is blessed with an extraordinary offensive line. As though other legitimate candidates are not surrounded by excellence Matt Ryan has Julio Jones, Aaron Rodgers has Jordy Nelson and Tom Brady has Bill Belichick. No one does this alone.sharks_398
