Coyotes reportedly closing in on Rick Tocchet to become new coach

The Coyotes are close to naming a new head coach, and it could be one of their former players.

The team is reportedly closing in on a four-year deal with Rick Tocchet, who spent three of his 19-year playing career with the Coyotes. The four-year deal, which was first reported by Sportsnet, would be the same length as the recent deals given to new Panthers coach Bob Boughner, Canucks coach Travis Green and Sabres bench boss Phil Housley.

There haven’t been many updates from either side regarding the status of potential negotiations, but on Tuesday, Tavares addressed the topic in Toronto.

It wasn’t exactly saying much, but the Islanders have made it clear that Tavares is a player whom they’d like to wear an Islander sweater for the entirety of his career.

The Islanders have reached the Stanley Cup playoffs in three of Tavares’ eight seasons with the teams, and most recently in 2016.

Since debuting in 2009, Tavares is ninth in the NHL in points, and seventh in goals.
